Fura was sitting with her father, Ævarr Ægirsson, in the early evening when he shared his concerns for the future. He believes that the early thaw is a bad omen and has received news from his brother that there are rumblings of discontent throughout the Bear Clan and beyond. Ævarr confided in Fura that he wishes to bring the local Vettring and Hugrung families closer through marriage and asked her to consider a betrothal to , the youngest son of Sigfred Ospakson. She expressed some concern over this, but promised to attend a dinner in two days time to get to know the young man better and at least consider the arrangement.
Around the same time, Sterk was running his skiff full of fish up onto the beach near his shack. As he secured the skiff he heard an old fishing woman, Asgeror Aundottir, yelling at him to come over and help her tie down her boat. Sterk took his time and was harshly berated by Asgeror for it. She told him that she knows a secret from his past and threatened to do something about it if he didn’t share half his catch with her. Sterk simply walked away, leaving her fuming.

The next morning Fura and Víðarr met Sterk at his parent’s fish stall where he was unloading his catch from the night before. Fura dragged the two out to their childhood haunt by the river to clear her mind. As they sat by the river, a wild looking old man came stumbling out of the brush. The three learned that his name is Griss Skalgson and he offered to tell them an amazing story in exchange for some candles, a freshly caught fish, and a sumptuous dinner at the Vettring longhouse ( Sterk tested Fishing and succeeded! ). They learned that the old trapper had stumbled upon a dwarf outside of a small cave up in the hills to the Northeast of the village. Through a combination of persuasion, logic, and bartering, the group talked a reluctant Griss into taking them to the dwarf-cave ( Fura tested Persuasion with help from Víðarr’s Rhetoric and Sterk’s Mending and succeeded. ). Víðarr shared his knowledge of dwarves (greedy, live in ornate stone halls underground, long-lived, crafted marvels for the Gods and men in ancient times, never break an oath) with the others in preparation for their journey ( Víðarr tested Superstition-wise ). Before heading out, Fura ran home to prepare a writ promising payment in food from the fall harvest on her farm, but unfortunately got lost on the way back, costing the group several hours of precious daylight.
Heading upriver, Griss got turned around several times even with help form Sterk, causing the group to just reach the edge of the forest by the hills by dusk ( Griss tested Orienteering with help from Sterk’s Wood-wise and failed! ). Making camp, Griss and Sterk built a fire to keep the group warm through the night ( Griss tested Firebuilding with help from Sterk’s Wood-wise and succeeded ). As Sterk kept watch, a brave and hungry cougar crept up on him in search of an easy meal. It knocked Sterk to the ground scratching at him in search of a soft spot. The whole camp awoke and leapt into action, with Víðarr barely shaking off sleep and his tendency to overthink in time to aid his friend ( Víðarr left his action up to the die of fate and got a 1! ). As Sterk kicked away from the cougar, Griss jumped up shouting at it with his arms overheard, Fura fearlessly stepped in front of the big cat with her sword drawn, and Víðarr threw a knife at a nearby tree attempting to startle it ( Fura rolled Sword with help from Griss’s Animal-wise, Sterk’s Power, and Víðarr’s Agility, handily beating the cougar’s Bite ). Startled and overwhelmed by the response, the cougar hastily retreated back into the woods.
